Mt. Teshio Opening
Teshio, a mountain peak in the northern Hokkaido region, will be opened on Sunday, June 2, 2024.
This is an annual event sponsored by Shibetsu City and attended by less than 100 climbers from the general public.
There are no high mountains north of Daisetsuzan and Tokachidake, partly due to geological factors that led to the formation of the land.
Teshio is the highest, but it is only 1500m high. However, it is one of the most difficult places to climb.
Last year, even though it was June, sleet began to fall and we had to turn back at the 8th station on the leader’s decision.
The trail is well-maintained but narrow, and even in June, there are still some snow-covered rilles and a significant portion of the trail is muddy, making the footing difficult.
The conditions are not easy to climb up, but the satisfaction is worth it.
First of all, the view is great. Even Daisetsuzan feels very close.
In a straight line, it is less than 100 km away, so it is close, but you cannot feel how close it is until you climb it.
Incidentally, the surrounding mountains, including Mt. Teshio, feel very close from Mt.
Teshio from Kurodake.
You will not understand this view until you climb the mountain.
