Pippu Ski Area
It is located in Pibu Town, south of Wassamu Town. It is about 2 km from National Route 40 into the mountains.
During the season, there is a bus service from JR Pibu Station and Asahikawa City.
The ski resort is characterized by its length, which is about 1.2 km in a straight line, but it is very wide horizontally. There are 9 courses in total.
Overall, there are straightforward medium slopes, making it a good place for beginners and intermediate skiers to practice.
Also, because of its proximity to Asahikawa City, major tournaments are held there.
On the day I visited in the 2012 season, the regional qualifying rounds of the All Japan Skiing Championships were being held.
It was a good learning experience just to watch.
There is a school, a spacious lodge, a cafeteria, and many skiers and snowboarders.
If the weather is good, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Daisetsuzan Mountains. There is a good chance that the weather will be clear for at least a short period of time, if not all day.
A further recommendation is the adjacent hot spring facility, Yuyu Pippu.
You can stay overnight, but you can also take a day trip for only 600 yen.
In 2012, a friend of mine skied at Wassamu Ski Resort, took a bath at this facility, and returned to Tokyo from Asahikawa Airport.
